SNAP May Stop, But We Aren’t
How Double Up Food Bucks Is Meeting the Moment in Michigan
As the federal government shutdown continues, most states — including our home state of Michigan — will not be able to distribute Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, for November. In Michigan alone, more than 1.4 million residents rely on SNAP to help put food on the table. For families who rely on this support, that means more barriers to putting food on their tables just as colder weather and the holiday season begin.
At Fair Food Network, we start with food — because food is a powerful lever for connection, resilience, and change. For over 15 years, we’ve built and grown our Double Up Food Bucks program in Michigan and supported its expansion to nearly 30 states. Double Up provides a $1 for $1 match on SNAP dollars spent on fresh fruits and vegetables — helping families bring home healthier food, boosting local farm income, and keeping dollars circulating in local economies.
But Double Up only works if SNAP works.

This October, we knew we had to act fast. With support from the State of Michigan and generous contributors to our Resilience Fund, we’re stepping up — bringing more flexibility, more options, and more dollars to Michigan families through our Double Up Food Bucks program through December 31, 2025.
What’s New:
- No expiration on Double Up earnings
The 90-day limit is lifted. Families can save and use their Double Up dollars when it works best for them.
- No daily earning cap
The usual $20/day limit is gone. Shoppers can earn more Double Up Food Bucks in a single trip.
- Frozen fruits and veggies now eligible
All 237 participating locations now accept Double Up for frozen produce (with no added salt, sugar, or oil). Families can stretch their food budget and stock up.
- Introducing Double Up Bonus Bucks
We’re launching a new, limited-time offering: Double Up Bonus Bucks. SNAP shoppers will receive a $40 voucher for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables — no SNAP purchase required. These will be distributed via printed vouchers, loyalty cards, or token systems at participating sites. Bonus Bucks expire December 31, 2025.
This rapid response wouldn’t have been possible without strong public-private partnerships. We’re deeply grateful to the State of Michigan, and to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Marguerite Casey Foundation, and other early supporters of our Resilience Fund for helping make this moment of swift action possible.
SNAP disruptions don’t just affect individual families — they ripple through the entire food system. Grocery stores see lower sales. Farmers lose customers. Communities lose momentum.
That’s why Fair Food Network exists.
We’re built for moments like this. Our mission is rooted in growing community health, wealth, and resilience — all through the power of food. When we invest in programs like Double Up, we’re not just helping people get by. We’re strengthening local food systems, supporting farmers and retailers, and creating a more just and resilient future for all.
But we can’t do it alone.
