In times of uncertainty, resilience is what carries us through. It’s what allows individuals, families, and communities to adapt, to withstand challenges, and to emerge stronger. And as I reflect on my own journey, I am reminded that food has played a powerful role in shaping my resilience—and in shaping the resilience of the communities where I’ve worked and lived.
I still remember the moment when food became something more than just sustenance for me. It was the summer of 2002, and I was living in New York City, working for ABC News. The world felt heavy in the aftermath of 9/11. The news cycle was relentless, filled with stories of violence, fear, and uncertainty. It was overwhelming, and I found myself needing to step away just to breathe.
One day, I wandered into a small neighborhood farmers market. I wasn’t a “food person” at the time—I used my oven as storage for books. But something about that market was different. There was music. There was color. There was community. And there was a peach vendor who offered me a taste of something extraordinary. That peach was a revelation. It was sweet, tart, juicy, and unlike anything I had ever experienced. In that moment, I felt something shift. I kept returning to that market week after week, and over time, food became more than just something I consumed. It became something I engaged with, something that connected me to people, something that brought me joy. That single moment changed the course of my life.
Now, more than 20 years later, I see the same need for resilience that I felt in that difficult time. We are living through unprecedented challenges—climate disasters, economic uncertainty, the lasting impacts of a global pandemic, and ongoing social injustices. These disruptions are coming at us with increasing frequency and intensity. And yet, just as I found hope in a farmers market decades ago, I see hope today in the people and communities building a better food system.
At Fair Food Network, we believe that food is a cornerstone of resilience. Food nourishes us, yes, but it also brings us together. It strengthens local economies, supports farmers, and builds community wealth. It is a powerful force for change.
That’s why we are launching the Resilience Fund.
This new initiative will provide rapid-response funding to support our partners and projects in times of uncertainty—especially when federal funding for food and agriculture programs is in flux. We know that moments of crisis often expose the fragility of our food systems, and we want to ensure that those working on the front lines have the support they need to keep going. Whether it’s farmers adapting to climate change, small food businesses navigating economic downturns, or organizations expanding food access programs in response to shifting policies, we are committed to standing with our partners through it all.
Resilience isn’t just about surviving hardship; it’s about creating systems that can adapt and thrive no matter what comes next. It’s about ensuring that no community is left behind when challenges arise. And it’s about recognizing that the strength of our food system lies in its people—farmers, food workers, advocates, families, and neighbors.
Today, I am more hopeful than ever. I see the work being done. I see the interconnected networks of farmers, businesses, and organizations creating a more just and resilient food system. I see people coming together, lifting each other up, and passing the baton when needed—not running a marathon, but a relay race in which we all support one another.
At Fair Food Network, we are committed to fueling this resilience, and we invite you to join us. Whether through advocacy, investment, or community action, we all have a role to play in strengthening our food system. And with the Resilience Fund, we hope to provide a safety net for those leading the charge.
Because everyone deserves a food system that nourishes, sustains, and empowers. We all deserve a peach that tastes like a peach.
Let’s build that future together.
With gratitude,
