Farmers Markets & Grocery Stores

Fair Food Network is supporting local North Carolina partners in launching incentive programming in Western North Carolina (WNC). MountainWise, a Public Health Partnership, secured the USDA Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program grant in 2019 to expand Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) to several farmers markets, grocery stores, and online markets across the western region.  MountainWise also supports Double SNAP programs in the High Country in partnership with Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, and the Asheville City Market in partnership with Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. MountainWise provides technical support to all DUFB sites to be successful at welcoming and engaging SNAP customers in healthy eating and local food purchasing. Many local organizations in WNC, including those aforementioned, are working towards strengthening the local food system to be a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable one, and SNAP Nutrition Incentive programs are integral to this effort.
