Double Up Food Bucks Awareness Month Spotlights Triple Impact of Essential Community Resource
July celebrations planned for Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon, Flint and Marquette
DETROIT—(June 26, 2025)— Fair Food Network today announced its inaugural designation of July as Double Up Food Bucks Awareness Month and released its 2025 monthlong celebration schedule.
Fair Food Network’s Double Up Food Bucks is an essential community resource that helps Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients purchase more fresh fruits and vegetables. Double Up provides Michigan households using SNAP a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $20 a day, on purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables at more than 230 participating grocery stores and farmers markets across the state.
More than 20 new locations are participating in the Double Up program this year compared to last year.
“What makes Double Up Food Bucks truly special is its triple impact: it puts more nutritious food on family tables, supports more than 1,000 Michigan farmers and local food producers, and keeps millions of dollars circulating in local economies,” said Fair Food Network CEO Kate Krauss. “This July, as we raise awareness about this vital resource, we’re reminded that access to healthy food shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be a guarantee for every Michigan resident.”
The Double Up Food Bucks July events will feature raffles, giveaways, and opportunities to sign up for the program. Celebrations will be held at the following locations.
- Grand Rapids: Thursday, July 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Great Giant, 1226 Madison Ave. SE #200.
- Detroit: Friday, July 11 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Imperial Fresh Market, 14424 Schaefer Hwy.
- Muskegon: Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Muskegon Farmers Market, 242 W Western Ave.
- Marquette: Wednesday, July 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Marquette Food Co-op, 502 W Washington St.
- Flint: Thursday, July 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hutchison Neighborhood Market, 6509 N Saginaw St.
- Lansing: Tuesday, July 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Farmers Market at the Capitol, 100 N Capitol Ave.
“These events are great opportunities for families to learn more about the program, meet local farmers, and sample fresh and delicious produce,” said Double Up Food Bucks Director Rachel Hoh. “We want all eligible Michiganders to learn how easy it is to double their purchasing power for fruits and vegetables.”
Locations participating in Double Up Food Bucks for the first time this year include the Royal Oak Farmers Market in Royal Oak, Pontiac Foodland in Pontiac, and Agricole Farm Stop in Chelsea. See a list of all participating locations.
In 2024, $12.4 million in local produce was purchased using SNAP and Double Up benefits, supporting more than 188,000 households and more than 1,000 Michigan farmers. This represents a significant boost to local economies: one dollar spent at a farmers market or farm stand can generate $1.70 for a community’s economy, and every dollar spent at a grocery store can generate $1.40.
Double Up received a historic $5 million investment from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) in the 2024-25 state budget.
“Maintaining consistent, robust funding for Double Up Food Bucks ensures that this essential infrastructure remains available not only for the families who depend on it but also the farmers who benefit from it,” Krauss said. “We’re grateful to state leaders for their profound commitment to the health and well-being of our communities, and we hope to see this investment continue as next year’s budget is negotiated in Lansing.”
Double Up Food Bucks was first launched in Detroit in 2009 by Fair Food Network. Since then, the program has become a national model for nutrition incentives and has been adopted by partners in 29 other states to improve healthy food access and boost local economies in their communities.
In addition to running the Double Up Food Bucks program in Michigan, Fair Food Network provides national technical assistance on behalf of the Nutrition Incentive Hub. Led by the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact in partnership with Fair Food Network and the University of California, San Francisco, the Nutrition Incentive Hub works with hundreds of nutrition incentive and produce prescription practitioners across states, U.S. territories, and tribal nations to evaluate, innovate, and scale their work to reach more people.
