Gary currently serves as an advisor to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Leadership Network Fellows. He recently retired as a principal consultant with the American Institutes for Research in Washington DC where he supported the reform efforts of state education agencies. He serves as the Fair Food Network’s board treasurer. In addition, he is on the board of FLOW, a Great Lakes water law and policy center and serves on the advisory boards of the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities and the Midwest and the Plains Equity Assistance Center. He was also elected to two terms on the board of education of a 10,000 student K-12 Michigan school district. Appel holds a Master’s degree in science education from the University of Michigan and is the co-author of two education books, Leading Lesson Study and The Growing Classroom.
