Alex Canepa

State Policy Manager

As State Policy Manager, Alex works with Fair Food Network partners and public officials to help grow Double Up Food Bucks to Michigan’s 83 counties. In August 2020, Alex was appointed  to the Food Security Council within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. He also provides policy support to SNAP incentive programs across the country as part of Fair Food Network’s technical assistance for the Nutrition Incentive Impact Hub.

Before joining the Fair Food Network team, Alex served as the Policy Officer for the Sustainable Food Center (SFC) based in Austin, Texas. In Texas, Alex led in the development and successful implementation of the SFC’s policy goals in the Texas Legislature.

Alex’s work in Texas built on experience gained at the national level at the Farmers Market Coalition and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His policy work is grounded by experience in vegetable farming and selling produce at Austin-area farmers markets.

When Alex isn’t thinking about, eating, or helping friends sell tomatoes, he’s walking his Great Pyrenees dog or playing baseball. He holds an MSc. in the History of Medicine and Science from the University of Oxford and a BA in History and Political Science from Trinity College, Dublin.
