About The Role:

As a Development Officer for Fair Food Network you will communicate the vision and work of Fair Food Network (FFN) in order to secure funds from foundations, corporations, and individuals, and you will help increase and diversify our portfolio of funders. You will report to our Development Director, and work closely with our Grants Manager and Development Coordinator.

This position will be based in Michigan, preferably, in Ann Arbor or Detroit. Exceptional applicants from the Boston area will be considered.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward current funders and prospects including foundations, corporations, and individuals through in-person visits and other forms of contact.
  • Identify, and build/manage relationships with new funders and connect them to ambitious new initiatives that FFN will launch in 2019.
  • Make effective use of Fair Food Network’s database and other resources to develop strategies, maximize funder engagement, and coordinate development activities to ensure their integration into Fair Food Network’s overall development goals.
  • Recruit, engage, and manage volunteer leaders and committee members, and provide them with leadership and direction in support of the cultivation and solicitation of foundation prospects and major donors.
  • Contribute to researching, writing, editing, and overseeing the preparation of proposals, reports, case statements, correspondence, and other development-related communication materials in support of fund-raising activities.
  • Assist in short- and long-range strategic planning activities to create and implement fund-raising goals and objectives.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

You have a proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with a variety of funders and donors.

What You’ll Need:

3-5 years of professional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Willingness and availability to travel extensively and to work extended hours as necessary.

Functional Expertise

  • Demonstrated ability in securing $100,000 grants and gifts from foundations, corporations, individuals, and other funding sources
  • Demonstrated ability to identify top priority funder prospects and connections to them, including by working with existing funders to develop their networks
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and implementing long- and short-range development initiatives in conjunction with strategic planning processes.
  • Experience with donor databases, Salesforce a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with leadership, prospects, donors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.

Hiring Process:

Fair Food Network’s hiring process for this role is rigorous and may be different from other hiring practices you have encountered before. We focus on each candidate’s demonstrated fit to preclude unconscious biases that emerge from knowledge of a candidate’s educational background, ethnicity, gender, or other attributes from influencing initial screening.
We evaluate candidates primarily through written exercises and trial project. This serves a dual purpose of providing candidates a taste our work and our recruitment team insight into whether a candidate possesses the skills and competencies that are a prerequisite to success in our organization.

Our hiring process includes these steps:

  1. Written application and resume submitted for initial screening
  2. 30-minute phone interview assess fit and answer candidate’s questions
  3. 4-hour trial project to be completed on your own timeline
  4. Half-day in-person interview with additional members of Fair Food Network staff including a member of our executive team
  5. Reference checks
  6. Offer issued
