Randi Dale and her 15-year-old daughter walked away from the farmers market in Battle Creek on Wednesday with bags full of locally-grown corn, cantaloupe, peaches and cucumbers. But instead of cash, the Battle Creek resident made her purchase with a different type of currency — tokens, provided by the Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program. “It helps me in so many ways,” Dale said. “It allows my kids and my family to eat healthy.”

In the early hours of July 12, the House Agriculture Committee passed the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act (H.R. 6083 AKA the Farm Bill) on a bipartisan vote of 35-11.

A little boy, seven or eight years old, walks up to the farmers’ market stall in Grand Rapids and asks for some “bubblegum plums and blackberries.” Full of confidence, he hands over tokens that double the value of his family’s food stamp benefits and tells the farmer: “The plums are for me, and the blackberries are for my Mom.”

During a special event at the popular Eastern Market, Metro Detroiters who receive Bridge Card food assistance may learn how to double the value when they purchase Michigan-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. An open house for the Fair Food Network's "Double Up Food Bucks" project is slated for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Eastern Market site on Russell Street between Mack and Gratiot avenues.
