June 1 is Double Up Food Bucks opening day! DUFB “matches” Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits spent at participating farmers’ markets, increasing access and affordability of healthy foods for low-income families and individuals and creating new sales opportunities for Michigan farmers. We are thrilled to announce the program will be available in 72 farmers’ markets in Michigan and 2 markets in Toledo, Ohio. Anyone who receives SNAP benefits can participate.

The recent announcement of the groundbreaking for two new supermarket chain grocery stores in Detroit is certainly welcome news for the city, but it is only a part of the march toward addressing the area's needs for retail food options.

A vast majority of Americans say they eat more whole grains and fresh produce than they did five years ago, but many believe the federal government needs to do more to ensure greater access to locally produced fresh food, according to a new survey.

Jane Bush of Charlotte, MI, is one of those smaller farmers with a diverse mix of products for a broad range of local customers. The latest venture for her Apple Schram Organic Orchard is sales of early tomatoes and extended season greens to hospitals in Jackson, Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan, as part of the new Four Seasons Cooperative.

The Senate’s Balanced Plan for Five Years of Farm Policy The Senate Agriculture Committee passed the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act (ARFJA)on April 26 by a 16-5 vote, and with it, the first hurdle in the 2012 Farm Bill race has been cleared.

In a city like Detroit finding healthy, fresh, and locally grown produce is very difficult. Most Detroit residents rely on neighborhood convenience stores and gas stations for their grocery shopping. That’s why Marlyn Minus, an inner-city single mother with nine daughters, is excited to participate in Fair Food Network’s (FFN) Double Up Food Bucks Program (DUFB).

An oft-heard complaint about "green" eating: high quality natural foods cost too much, remaining out of reach for people of limited means. On the other hand, concerns about nutritional value in the diets of the less fortunate have led to proposed bans on using food stamps for sugary soda drinks or junk food.
