The warmth of Los Angeles – both in weather and reception by the food community – provided the perfect setting for an inspiring and fruitful week on the Fair Food Book Tour. The ready availability of every kind of vegetable and fruit imaginable captured our taste buds, and the visits to bookstores and markets, interviews with the LA Times, radio and TV were impressive and energizing.

As the farmers' market season gets under way in the U.S., more shoppers than ever will be supporting local growers and producers. (According to a 2010 Department of Agriculture survey, at least 6,132 markets exist nationally, a 16 percent increase from 2009). While there has never been a more popular time for extolling the nutritional and culinary value of local food in the mainstream media, not everyone is convinced of the economic benefits of local food systems.

Fair Food Network’s Double Up Food Bucks program is back this summer and bigger than ever!  The official kickoff for 2011 is July 9 at Detroit Eastern Market – come join us if you can!  Look for our tent between 10:30am and 1:30pm outside the Welcome Center, near Shed 3 on Adelaide Street.

The Hub SoMa, an 8,000-square-foot work and event space in downtown San Francisco featuring an art gallery, kitchen/café, and more than 70 work stations was the hip location of the Fair Food San Francisco book event.

Farm Bill hearings have officially begun, and the major themes in both the House and Senate are the same: cut costs, create an effective farm safety net that protects farmers and rural communities, consolidate programs so they deliver better results more efficiently, and root out fraud.
