The Double Up Food Bucks Program begins on Saturday, August 14. Its goal is to provide low-income families more access to nutritious food and encourage them to eat healthier. Eligible Bridge Card users could receive up to $20 in Double Up Food Buck tokens that can be redeemed for Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables.

Starting this week, people who shop with food stamps at Detroit's farmer's markets can see their money go twice as far. The "Double Up Food Bucks" program was developed by the Fair Food Network, which is headed by Oran Hesterman. He says Detroiters spend $450 million a year in food stamps. And he says 60 percent of that money is spent at liquor stores, party stores, and gas station convenience stores.

To encourage healthy eating among low-income Michigan families, the Fair Food Network is launching a new program Saturday. The program, called "Double Up Food Bucks," will provide people who use bridge cards with food assistance benefits at five Detroit farmers' markets.

The Ann Arbor-based Fair Food Network has secured a $3 million challenge grant from the New York-based Open Society Institute and Soros Foundations Network to take statewide a Detroit pilot program to motivate low-income people to purchase more locally grown fresh produce.
